IH HOTLINE: Did I make the right decision to study hospitality? 我学习酒店管理专业是正确的选择吗？
We received the following questions from Zhang, who is from Zhuhai, China!
Dear IH Hotline,
I hope my message finds you well.
At this unprecedented time, I have a question regarding my personal professional development. I would like to know how could I develop my skills to best cope with the changing hotel environment, and adapt them to work once COVID-19 is over? And how much has COVID-19 affected the recruiting demand for the hospitality industry in China? As a young hospitality talent who has invested much on overseas education, I wonder how could I maximize my value in the hospitality industry, which normally is perceived as a relatively low-paid work sector?
Thank you for your efforts in advance, and I look forward to your reply!!
Thank you for your questions and for reaching out to the IH Hotline! We will start with answering your last question first:
Q: As a young hospitality talent who has invested much on overseas education, I wonder how could I maximize my value in the hospitality industry, which normally is perceived as a relatively low-paid work sector?
A: Let’s start with thinking about the ROI (return on investment) for your hospitality education. By studying hospitality, you have learned/experienced the following:
Exposure and ability to work with diverse people
Customer service mindset
Living/working in other countries
Business basics, operations and finance
What’s even more of an ROI for your education is that the skills listed above can be applied to ANY industry – a great advantage to you and your future!
As for salary, one thing to keep in mind is that entry level salary, is just that – entry level salary.
In any job, you have to start with the basics. The more experience & expertise you acquire, the more valuable you become and the better positioned you are to negotiate your salary and opportunities for promotion. As mentioned above, your skillset is 100% transferrable. If working in a hotel or restaurant is not for you, explore other industries for your career that utilizes your valuable hospitality skills.

Q: I would like to know how could I develop my skills to best cope with the changing hotel environment, and adapt them to work once COVID-19 is over?
A: The most critical skill needed for a changing hotel environment is adaptability. Adaptability is the ability to remain calm, collected, and finding opportunities to overcome difficult situations like COVID-19.
Below is a list of how hotels have changed since COVID-19 and you can think about how you can adapt to this new reality for hotel operations:
Food delivery/ drive-through services
Temperature checks through body scans, facial recognition, QR codes
Strict guidelines for cleaning/ sanitizing guest rooms and public areas
Diverse marketing communication platforms and brand messaging
Cost savings through reduced operations and services
Q: And how much has COVID-19 affected the recruiting demand in the hospitality industry in China?
A: According to the HVS report “COVID-19 and the Chinese Hotel Sector”, hotel owners and investors reported a reduction of frontline staff by 75-80% through measures that included reducing hours and clearing annual leave. The report also highlighted short-term and long-term measures that hotel owners are considering as part of a long-term strategy:
Increase proportion of local employees
Raise commission and reduce base salary
COVID-19 is not the last crisis that will impact our industry, but your hospitality training has equipped you with the essential skills to overcome any crisis – another valuable ROI!
